Offering Adults with Psychiatric Illnesses an Option for Inpatient Care

PASADENA, TX, —HCA affiliated Bayshore Medical Center announces it will begin seeing patients in its new adult psychiatry department--Adult Behavioral Health Solutions on Monday, May 16, 2011.

The new department will help fill a community need to serve those who suffer from or exhibit signs of psychiatric disorders. The hospital has invested nearly $200,000 in security equipment for both the safety of the unit’s patients as well as our hospital staff, medical staffs and patients. The new unit provides 24 beds in an inpatient, all-private department on the hospital’s fifth floor and will be able to serve patients sent from outlying areas as well.

"The department is designed for patient comfort and safety and will assist local families whose adult members are struggling with mental health issues." said Jeff Holland, CEO of Bayshore Medical Center. "In the past, if someone came to our hospital with a psychiatric need, we would have to send them to Houston. Now we are looking forward to helping people right here in our own community."

The hospital program will treat adults with a wide variety of diagnoses including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, behavioral disorders and Schizophrenia.

"We understand that the decision to place a family member into treatment can be difficult," says Scott York, Director of Behavioral Health Services at Bayshore Medical Center. "Our treatment team including psychiatrists, the psychologists, social workers, addiction counselors and rehabilitation specialists—all work together to determine a course of treatment for the patient and support for the family. We are dedicated to providing adults with the care they need to recover from mental health challenges in a caring and compassionate treatment environment."

Mental illness can strike anyone, regardless of age, economic status, race, creed or education. Half of all Americans will experience a brain, behavior or addictive disorder at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Bayshore Medical Center recognizes the importance of providing a place for people to get information and treatment in order to battle the shortage of mental health treatment facilities.
