More than $20,000 in Scholarships Given to Local Area College Students

PASADENA, TX, —The Bayshore Medical Center Volunteers’ Scholarship Committee presented thirteen San Jacinto college students with $1000 scholarships at their annual Volunteer Scholarship Awards Banquet this past Friday. Eight additional scholarships were also being given to returning students, providing a grand total of $21,000 in scholarships for 2011.

Under the disguise of a scholarship interview, the applicants sat in the cafeteria waiting anxiously as they prepared for what they believed was going to be the final round of their interview process requiring them to present a short speech about why they deserve a scholarship.

However, as they took their seats in the classroom, they were told to open up envelopes under their seats. Tears and laughter soon filled the room as the applicants realized they were all winners.

Scholarship recipients all smiles.

“I was completely caught off guard when we found out that we had all been granted scholarships,” said recipient Eric Vaquerano. “It was so exciting to see the look of surprise on everyone’s face especially considering we all thought we were here for our final interview.”

Bayshore volunteers have been giving out scholarships to local students pursuing a career in the medical field at San Jacinto College for more than 20 years. The money for the scholarships is raised each year through proceeds from the volunteer gift shop and hospital fundraisers. In 2010 alone, Bayshore volunteers gave out more than $45,000 in scholarships.

Helping students is part of Bayshore’s mission of caring for their community. Not only does the hospital sponsor local student initiatives at the middle and high school level, but also plans and hosts yearly events like school supply drives and an annual “Back to School” Ice Cream Social. The proceeds of these events go to a variety of organizations throughout the community.

Individuals interested in applying for this opportunity can pick up an application at the front desk of the hospital, located at 4000 Spencer Highway, or call 713-359-5100 for more information. Deadlines to submit scholarship applications are in July and October of each year.
